Roots Of Chainsaw Art

Roots of chainsaw Art Started with Ray Murphy in 1952. Ray used his father's chainsaw to saw names and messages to his brother. Ray has always used chainsaws as his only tools for 57 years doing Real Chainsaw Art. Real Chainsaw Art is done using chainsaws as only tools from start to finish and no carving tools are used at all.

Chainsaw as Pre-carve Tool

About 1960 a wood-carver started using a chainsaw as a pre-carve tool along with all kinds of hand carving and power carving tools. The end result was a sanded wood carving that was not real chainsaw art. This was called "chainsaw carving" by a news reporter. Now there are all kinds of chainsaw carvers out there and some do not even own a chainsaw. Perhaps this should be called "power tool wood carving"! Real chainsaw art is still done using only chainsaws.
